The primary goal of a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) is to encourage foreign direct investment and the stability that accompanies economic prosperity. Most BITs provide an impartial forum for the settlement of investment disputes in order to facilitate these goals; ideally, the law of state responsibility developed in those tribunals will in turn encourage the development of effective and fair local dispute settlement processes.

In this symposium, representatives from the government, civil society, and the academy will explore the challenges inherent in creating and implementing BITs.
